Area Development Programme:

Jharkhand GUP:

GUP initiated Gandhi Ashram Project at Olda-Gahalamura village of Baharagora Block of East Singhbhum district of the then Bihar (now it is Jharkhand) for demonstration of model community development intervention through the ideas of "Khadi" and promotion of People's Action Groups for motivation of hundreds of area specific community based organisations (CBOs) and Social Action Groups (SAGs) in different parts of the said State in the year 1987. A series of activities on health, education, income generation, skill upgradation, eco-harmony, social forestry, improved agriculture, pisciculture and awareness generation camps are being organized with active participation of the community people living in the surrounding 500 villages. It is worth to be mentioned here that a Regional Technical training Centre for the unemployed youths is going to be established within couple of years at our Gandhi Ashram Premises (a donated Land of Local People)
To overcome the drinking water problem in and around Gandhi Ashram 20 Tubewells, Small Check-dam and pond were excavated with the support of the LAMP.
After this people started taking interest in proper functioning and the progress of this project (GAP), it was consciously decided by GUP to handover the power of management of the project to the local people, specially to the identified potential leaders among them. Accordingly, Bihar Gana Unnayan Parshad was promoted with active participation of potential community based leaders in its governing body and it was duly registered under the concerned State Societies Registration Act. in the year 1992. Since then it has been functioning under the guidance of local leadership and has been successful in organizing 200 women Self Help Groups, hundreds of awareness generation camps on different issues, savings and micro credit activity, skills development, income generation through agro-based activities, animal husbandry training for the people and planting more than 50000 saplingss of variety fruits, fodder and timber bearing trees with the active participation of the community people and in collaboration with local forest department.
