
GUP has been running a Short Stay Home for the destitute women and the women in moral danger since 1995 at NABODAYA center , Rajarhat, 24 Parganas(N).This home has got the capacity of accommodating 30 inmates who are mostly sent or referred by the social Welfare Department, local police station, Panchayets , district Administration and other NGOs. Though it is a short stay home, the inmates live here in a homely atmosphere and provided with food, clothes, regular health check-ups and necessary treatment. They also get the opportunity to have vocational training on different trades like - sewing, knitting, jute handicrafts making, chalk pencil making etc. Some of then have been provided with nursing training in collaboration with St. John Ambulance and local nursing homes. After completion of these training, many of them got jobs in different nursing homes and clinics which has helped them to have a regular income of their own. This has not only enhanced but also strengthen their financial base through regular savings of their income. This savings come to a great help when they go out of this 'home'.
The visitors and other Govt. officials visited this 'Home' on different occasions praised very high about the function of this center. This Short Stay Home has come to a great help for the women in distress, especially for those who have nobody and nowhere to go to tide over the immediate crisis period.
This Short Stay Home is supported by Ministry of Women & Children Dept, Govt. of India.
GUP for its commendable service to the poor and destitute women for a long time Govt of West Bengal ,Dept of Social Welfare has recognized as Service Provider in time of distress for extending all kinds of supports like counseling,shelter,Rehabilitation,to the Poor Destitute women victims affected by domestic violence particularly for one district like North 24-parganas.GUP is working in collaboration with Women Commission and other Net Works for combating the violence against women.
b.Family Counselling and Legal Aid Services:GUP has been organizing Legal Education training programme for awareness generation among the women about their socio-legal, basic human rights, it has also been working relentlessly for motivation of the people en mass to give due respect to the women who should not be treated as an object. Violation of human rights of the women are very much in practice in our society. The women are being tortured both physically and mentally, exploited in different forms and being neglected in different arena of life. Hence, the family counseling centers run by GUP in different strategic places in different States of West Bengal, Orissa, Tripura , Manipur have been proved very much effective to boost up the courage of women to protest against any sort of injustices inflicted on them. Because of appointment of practicing advocates / Lawyers on full time basis in these centers it has been possible to give instant legal aid services to those exploited / deprived women whose cases could not be solved through counseling. Hundreds of such cases were handled by GUP in all the States of its operation for giving justice for those women during last couple of years.
To make women aware of different types of violence and injustices they are victimized of and how to protest against the same, a series of seminars, workshops were organized on the subjects like - impact of domestic violence on women, domestic Violence, Women trafficking, legal rights, Gender Justice, rights of the women laborers, communal harmony and the role of women, women's human rights etc. in collaboration with associate member organizations and groups at different strategic places in all those States mentioned before.
A toll free 24 hour Helpline for the destitute women is also run at the centre. The number of this Helpline is 10925.
Integrated Child Protection Scheme ( I.C.P.S.)- Open Shelter Home for the Boys under ICPS:
Gana Unnayan Parshad has been working for the Comprehensive development of the children at risks since 1990 and has been successfully Completed Integrated Programme for Street Children ( I.P.S.C.) in Kolkata Municipality areas. GUP also running Child Labour and Shikshalaya Prakalpa in Kolkata Municipal Areas. As an experienced and expertised NGO working in the filed of Child Development, Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India entrusted GUP to implement Open Shelter Home for Boys under the newly launched Scheme named as Integrated Child Protection Scheme at Bosepukur ( Kolkata).
Project Brief: Integrated Child Protection Scheme ( ICPS) is based on the cardinal principles of Protection of Child Rights and best interests of the child. Thus the aims of the Project are to promote the best interests of the child and prevent violations of child rights and to ensure rehabilitation for all urban children in need of care and protection. Thus the Project will focus its activities on children in need of care and protection and children in conflict and contact with the law.
1) To attract above-mentioned target group of children from their present vulnerable life situation to a sage environment;
2) To wean these children away from the vulnerable situations by sustained interventions;
3) To guide these children away from high risk and socially deviant behaviors;
4) To provide opportunities for education and develop their potential and talent;
5) To enhance life-skills and reduce their vulnerabilities to exploitation;
6) To reintegrate these children into families, alternative care and community;
7) To carryout out regular follow up to ensure that children do not return to vulnerable situations.
To fulfil the Objectives of the Project the following activities are undertaken- 1) Improve access to and quality of child protection services; 2) Raise public awareness about the reality of child rights, situation and protection in India, 3) Clearly articulated responsibilities and enforced accountability for child protection 4) Established and functioning structures at all government levels for delivery of statutory and support services to children in difficult circumstances and 5) Introduced and operational evidence based monitoring and evaluation.

Gana Unnayan Parshad has been running one Residential Unit in the Haranath High School for Boys at 78, Bag Bazer Street, Kolkata-700003 under the sponsorship of Sarba Shiksha Mission, Kolkata for the last 3 years by providing food, clothes, shoes, winter and casual garments, education, recreation, vocational training, medical check-up etc to the target groups – orphan, street children and other unprivileged , under privileged children who could not get access to school for continuation of their education. 100 such male children of 10-14 years have been enrolled in this residential care centre. Apart from all regular activities and services provided to these children, some specific activities as mentioned below were undertaken.
Major Activities organized during this span of time:
- Celebration of Rabindra Jayanti at Haranath Residential unit on 9th May, 2015.
- Sister Cyril and her team visited our Residential unit on 11th April, 2015.
- A day long seminar on JJ Act was organized at this centre on 3rd July, 2015.
- ‘Rathayatra Utsav’ was celebrated with active participation of all children on 11th July,2015. - Birth day of Haranath Thakur, Saraswati Puja, National Independence day, Teachers’ day, Republic Day, Netaji’s Birth day etc. were celebrated at this residential unit of Haranath High School.
- A good number of inmates of this residential unit participated in a Drawing Competition organized by Teri, New Delhi on Save the Ganga at Nabajatak Girls High School.
- The children of Haranath High School participated in a Talent Search contest organized by Parle-G on 20th December, 2015.
- Japani Encefalytis Vaccine were given to all inmates of this unit on 11th February, 2016.
-Besides, a day long annual picnic was organized for the students of Haranath Residential High School at Uluberia in Howrah district on 9th January, 2016 with the support of Jindal Foundation Trust. All children of this residential school participated in this picnic along with all staff & members associated with this project
- Sister Syril and Jonny met all staff members of Haranath Residential School unit on the occasion of Annual Meeting held on 19th February, 2016 at Kolkata.
- Annual Guardians meeting was organized on 27th February, 2016 in the presence of all staff and members of the organisation.
Another Residential Unit for 100 boys at Sahid Smriti Pratamik Vidyalaya started under the sponsorship of Sarba Shiksha Mission, Kolkata with effect from 18/02/2016. This unit started functioning officially from 15th March, 2016 with 9 boys managed by one Warden and other 8 staff members. All activities like residential educational programme for children at Haranath High School were undertaken in this residential school also. However, other important activities were not implementing due to incomplete infrastructure of the school.
F.Child Labour Project:From the year 2002 GUP has been running a Project for the elimination of Child Labour in Park circus in Ward no. 61 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Under this project GUP has been successfully running one Special School for child laborers under the sponsorship of Kolkata Child Labor Rehabilitation cum Welfare Society (an autonomous body of the Dept. of Labor, Govt. of West Bengal), where 50 child laborers are getting education, Vocational Training, nutritious mid day meal, medical facilities etc. They are also enjoying sports, cultural and recreational programmers. All the target children of the school are provided with stipend facilities each @ Rs. 100/- per month. GUP has already rehabilitated 250 child labors in three batches from 2002 to 2015. Moreover, GUP is continuously undertaking strong Campaign Programme to stop employment of child labor in any kind of establishment in West Bengal.
